Where Kentucky's KYTC-prequalified contractors are based: Fayette and Jefferson lead
This site's directory lists 254 Kentucky-based firms from KYTC's prequalified contractors list, spread across 79 counties.
Only contractors prequalified by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet can register to bid on the cabinet's highway contracts. KYTC publishes its prequalified contractors list on the Division of Construction Procurement website. This site loaded the list to start its Kentucky contractor directory. It holds 254 prequalified firms with Kentucky addresses, located in 79 of the state's 120 counties.
The top counties
- Fayette: 30 firms
- Jefferson: 25
- Boone: 12
- Warren: 11
- Nelson: 10
- Washington: 8
- Bath: 7
- Hopkins: 6
Lexington and Louisville together account for 55 firms, about 22% of the Kentucky-based total. Boone County, in Northern Kentucky across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, is third. Warren County (Bowling Green) is fourth. Smaller counties like Nelson, Washington and Bath have more prequalified firms than their size might suggest.
What kind of firms
This site assigns each firm a trade category from the work it is prequalified for. Of the 254, 177 are categorized as bridge and highway contractors, 23 as site work and excavation, 13 as paving and asphalt, 9 as landscaping and 6 as concrete. These categories are this site's summary; KYTC's list shows each firm's actual prequalified work categories, and that list is what counts for bidding.
Why the list matters
KYTC's Notice to Contractors for each letting states that the department "will only accept bidder registration forms from contractors who are prequalified in the work categories of the particular project." For the Nov. 19, 2026 letting, registration closes at 3:00 p.m. on Nov. 18, and bids are due through Bid Express at 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 19.
For subcontractors and suppliers, the list is a map of potential customers. A paving subcontractor in Warren County, for example, can see which prequalified primes are nearby and check whether they have registered for a local contract on KYTC's eligible bidders list.
What is not on the list
Kentucky has no statewide general contractor license. The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction licenses or certifies trades such as plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors, and sprinkler and fire alarm contractors, but it offers individual lookups rather than a bulk download. That means contractors who do not work for KYTC are not yet in this site's Kentucky directory. Any Kentucky contractor can add a free listing, and prequalified firms can claim and complete theirs.
About the count
This site matched the list's Kentucky addresses to counties by ZIP code; 254 matched. Firms whose addresses could not be matched, and any out-of-state firms, are not in the county counts. The list was retrieved Oct. 30, 2026, and prequalification status changes over time, so check KYTC's current list before relying on it.

By highway district
KYTC divides the state into 12 highway districts. By district office, the 254 firms break down this way:
- District 7 (Lexington): 52
- District 5 (Louisville): 39
- District 4 (Elizabethtown): 26
- District 6 (Covington): 23
- District 3 (Bowling Green): 22
- District 2 (Madisonville): 16
- District 1 (Paducah): 16
- District 9 (Flemingsburg): 15
- District 8 (Somerset): 14
- District 12 (Pikeville): 13
- District 11 (Manchester): 9
- District 10 (Jackson): 9
District 7, around Lexington, leads, followed by District 5 around Louisville. The eastern districts around Jackson, Manchester and Pikeville have the fewest prequalified firms with local addresses.

By mailing address, Lexington has the most firms (30), followed by Louisville (25), Bardstown (9), Bowling Green and Springfield (8 each) and Frankfort (5).
