Kentucky contractor licensing: no statewide general contractor license, but trade licenses and local rules
Kentucky does not issue a statewide general contractor license. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC work is licensed by the state, and some cities and counties license builders locally.
Kentucky does not have a statewide general contractor license. Instead, the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC) licenses or certifies specific trades, and local governments may have their own rules for builders. Check with the city or county where the work is before you bid.
State trade licenses
HBC says it licenses or certifies plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors, sprinkler and fire alarm contractors and building inspectors, and it enforces statewide building standards. Check HBC's license lookup for any firm you plan to hire.
Highway work: KYTC prequalification
For state road work the key credential is prequalification with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The Cabinet's Notice to Contractors says it accepts bidder registration forms only from contractors who are prequalified in the work categories of the particular project. KYTC's Prequalified Contractors List dated October 1, 2026 lists 254 firms with a Kentucky address, which seed the contractor listings on this site. See our KYTC bidding guide.
What this site lists
Because HBC's license data is available only through its lookup, the listings here start with KYTC's prequalified contractors. Any Kentucky contractor can add or claim a free listing.
